GIS PlaNET 98 is an international conference on Geographic Information to be held in Lisbon from the 7th to the 11th of September 1998 for an audience of 1 500 attendees. The development of emerging technologies provides the opportunity to present the current state-of-the-art in the framework of the establishment of global Inter-Operable GI Infrastructures. A set of Workshops and Special Events are planned for the 7th and 8th of September.

Lisbon hosts the 1998 World Exhibition (Expo ´98) where more than 130 countries will be represented. From May 22nd to September 30th 12 million visitors are expected. The 500 years celebration of the Portuguese Discoveries that brought major advances to modern cartography, navigation and to the global knowledge of the world provides the perfect environment for GIS PlaNET 98.

The general purpose of the conference is to discuss the application of research concepts as a support for the development of a geographic information society, considering the different perspectives of academy, industry, government, users and citizens, as a contribution for the construction of a global sustainable world.
